Patrolman Smith was killed when a Santa Fe railroad car carrying 250 barrels of gasoline exploded at the Ardmore passenger terminal. Dozens of other bystanders were killed as a result of the explosion.

Back in the 1890's, Ardmore was nearly completely destroyed by fire. Much of the restoration was due to the discovery of oil. Ironically, oil and its byproducts also led to the great destruction that killed Patrolman Smith, and at least forty-nine other people.
