Officer Sickles succumbed to injuries sustained the previous day when he was stabbed by an inmate. Officer Sickles was attempting to break up a fight between two inmates in which one of the inmates had been stabbed by the other prisoner. Officer Sickles was in turn stabbed by the inmate who was stabbed. The inmate who started the incident was convicted of murdering the other inmate and Officer Sickles and sentenced to death.

Officer Sickles was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He had been with the California Department of Corrections for 23 years and was survived by his wife and three children.
