Officer Shull was beaten and stabbed to death at Soledad Prison by inmates in retaliation for the deaths of three inmates the previous year. Officer Shull was stabbed more than forty times with a metal file which had been sharpened into a shank.

Officer John Mills was beaten to death on January 16, 1970, in retaliation for the same three deaths.

On July 21, 1971, Officer Leo Davis was stabbed to death at the San Quentin State Prison while guarding a prisoner who was a witness to Officer Shull's murder. Three inmates were attempting to gain access to the prisoner's hospital cell to murder him and attacked Officer Davis in an attempted to get his keys.

Most Recent Reflection

We have honored Officer William Shull at the Correctional Training Facility (Soledad) with a memorial garden and bronze plaque. On May 17, 2012, a large ceremony was held with many law enforcement in attendance. I am working with an author to document in a book the history of Soledad Prison and our fallen officers. It is important that we never forget the sacrifice that William Shull made. If you are a family member or friend of William Shull, I encourage you to contact me and I will arrange for you to visit the memory garden and will provide photographs of the ceremony.
