Officer Sheares was stabbed to death on West 153rd Street while attempting to arrest a man for rape while off duty. The suspect stabbed him in the arm, chest, and abdomen. He was transported to Harlem Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds two days later.
Officer Sheares had been with the agency for three years and was assigned to the 32nd Precinct. He was survived by his wife and 9-year-old son.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 76th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service to my home state and the birthplace of my son. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
