Patrolman Michael Shaughnessy was killed during an escape attempt.

Patrolman Shaughnessy was one of three officers attacked by a mob attempting to free a prisoner at 493 Canal Street. One of the officers was knocked down, beaten and cut with a knife. This officer drew his service revolver and fired at his assailants. Officer Shaughnessy was mortally wounded by the bullet.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the one hundred and eighth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
