Deputy Chief Shanley and Patrolman Walter Rusinak were shot and killed in the line of duty. The suspect was arrested, sentenced to death, and executed on March 26, 1945.

Deputy Chief Shanley had served with the agency for 18 years. He was survived by his wife and two children.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
