Sheriff Mark Sensenbach and Deputy Harry Siegfried were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for failing a $2 fine for not sending his children to school.

The suspect opened fire on the two officers inside his home, shooting Deputy Siegfried 18 times and Sheriff Sensenbach 38 times.

The suspect was shot and killed by a posse as he attempted to flee into the woods after the posse set fire to his farmhouse.

Sheriff Sensenbach is buried in Union West End Cemtery.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 87th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
