Deputy Scheffler was killed in an automobile accident while returning to Indio Station from an official trip to Riverside. During the trip his vehicle veered off of the divided highway and flipped over.
Deputy Scheffler had been with the agency for one year and was survived by his wife and twin daughters.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 56th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
