Inspector Scannell was shot and killed when he was ambushed while transporting an illegal alien he had just apprehended. He was walking along the Rio Grande River near Polvo, Texas, when the incident took place. His body was found with two gunshot wounds. The suspects were never apprehended.

Inspector Scannell had been with the agency for eight years.
