Trooper Sawa and Trooper Larry Small were killed when their cruisers were struck by a tractor trailer. The officers were in the median of I-95 near Havre de Grace, Maryland, exchanging information when the semi ran off the road and struck both of the cruisers.

Trooper Sawa had been with the agency for almost five years and was survived by his wife and two children.
