Deputy Marshal Saunders was shot and killed in Gadsden County, Florida, at 2 p.m. when he and other marshals went to a man's home on official business just outside of Quincy, Florida.
Formerly a Pensacola newspaper editor, a U.S. Post Master at DeFuniak, Fl. and a former state legislator, Deputy Saunders was appointed as a deputy U.S. Marshal in the summer of 1889.
He had served with the agency for less than a year when he was killed and was survived by his wife and two children.
