Officer Sass was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic at Grand Boulevard and Chouteau Avenue. He was struck by a northbound vehicle as he gave right-of-way to east and westbound traffic. The driver of the vehicle that struck him was charged with careless driving and felonious wounding.
Officer Sass had been with the agency for two years and was survived by his mother.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 85th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never dimishes respect, not even 85 years.
