Guard Sankey died after falling out of a patrol wagon during the 1964 riots. The patrol wagon was involved in an accident at 24th Street and Cumberland Avenue and Guard Sankey's door opened. He fell out of the door and struck his head on the curb. He was transported to Women's Medical Hospital where he died almost 3 hours later.

Park Guard Sankey, you made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the people of Philadelphia and for that sacrifice and the service you provided up until then, you have not been forgotten. Your job was a tough one, but you did it and for that, you are a hero.
