Officer Charles Sanders was shot and killed after responding to a call that Deputy Sheriff David Hefner and his partner, of the Lane County Sheriff's Department, had been wounded while investigating a domestic violence call. When Officer Sanders arrived he and other officers engaged the suspect in a two-hour gun battle.

As Officer Sanders and other officers attempted to enter the suspect’s house, Officer Sanders was shot and killed with a rifle. The suspect then shot and killed himself. Deputy Sheriff Hefner died one month later from his wound.

Officer Sanders had been with agency for nine years.
