Sergeant Sanchez succumbed to a gunshot sustained two months earlier while arresting a suspect for robbery. The leg wound caused a blood clot to develop, which moved to his heart.

Sergeant Sanchez was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean War and had been a a prisoner in a German POW camp for 20 months. He was survived by his wife and daughter.
