Jesus Sanchez

Correctional Officer Jesus Sanchez was shot and killed from ambush by several suspects who were attempting to free a prisoner who was being transported to court.

He and another officer had just left the California Institution for Men and were transporting the prisoner to a court hearing in San Bernardino for a previous escape charge. Two cars pulled alongside their vehicle and forced it from the road on Edison Avenue, near Euclid Avenue. The occupants then removed Officer Sanchez and the other officer from the vehicle and shot them both. Officer Sanchez was killed while the other officer was wounded.

The men, along with the prisoner, fled the scene.

Lord, when it’s time to go inside,
That place of steel and stone.
I pray that you will keep me safe,
So I won’t walk alone.
Help me to do my duty,
Please watch me on my rounds.
Amongst those perilous places
And slamming steel door sounds.
God, Keep my fellow Officers
Well and free from harm.
Let them know I’ll be there too,
Whenever there’s alarm.
Above all when I walk my beat,
No matter where I roam.
Let me go back whence I came,
To family and home.

RIP We have the watch now
