Reserve Deputy Sheriff Chester Alquist was struck and killed by a drunk driver while assisting at the scene of a previous accident.

He was placing flares out to alert other drivers of the crash when he was struck and killed.

Reserve Deputy Alquist was one of 24 reserve deputies who had been called into service to assist with traffic control for New Year's Eve.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 44th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect, not even 44 years.
