Matthias H. Rude

Police Officer Matthias Rude was attacked and killed when a prisoner struck him on the head with a mattock in the Seattle stockade yard. Officer Rude was assisting other officers in guarding 30 prisoners who were on a work detail.

The subject who murdered him was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison, where he died in 1911.

Officer Rude had served with the Seattle Police Department for three months and had previously served with the King County Sheriff's Office for four two years. He was survived by his wife and two sons.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 100th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
