Patrolman Edward Ruark was shot and killed at the intersection of Mallory Avenue and Communipaw Avenue stopping a stolen car that was used in a homicide in Newark.

As Patrolman Ruark questioned one of the subjects, another exited the car and shot him several times.

All three suspects, one adult and two juveniles, were apprehended. One was convicted of a store manager's murder and executed two years later. Another was convicted of Patrolman Ruark's murder and sentenced to death.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the eighty-first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
