Detective John Roberts was shot and killed after interrupting a gas station robbery. As he went for his service weapon he was shot and killed by the robber. The suspect stole $8.00 and fled but was eventually apprehended.

The suspect was an escapee from a North Carolina prison and was sentenced to the death penalty for the killing of Detective Roberts.

Detective Roberts was retired after serving with the agency for 31 years and was survived by his wife, son, three daughters, and two sisters.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 76th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
