Deputy Marshal Clyde Rivers was shot and killed when he and a deputy sheriff stopped a car near Booneville, Mississippi, while investigating liquor law violations.
When Deputy Marshal Rivers told the occupants he had warrants for some of their arrests the men immediately opened fire, killing him. The deputy sheriff returned fire as the suspects fled.
Four men were arrested and charged with murder. Two were convicted of murder and sentenced to life. One was pardoned a few years later and the other was pardoned in 1946.
