Officer Reidy was robbed then shot and killed in the stairway of his apartment building during a robbery attempt. Officer Reidy began to struggle with the suspect and attempted to arrest him but was shot several times. Although mortally wounded, Officer Reidy was able to return fire but did not strike the suspect. The suspect was arrested three days later and after trial was convicted of Officer Reidy's murder.

On July 25, 2003, the corner at which Officer Reidy was killed was officially renamed Police Officer Michael Reidy Pathway in his honor. Officer Reidy had only been with the agency for six months and was assigned to the 41st Precinct. He was survived by his mother and five siblings.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 25th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never dimishes respect, and your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for the solace of all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. I hold your family in my heart's embrace today.
