Patrolman Ray succumbed to gunshot wounds received one month earlier while responding to a burglary call. A store owner had arrived to work and discovered the burglary. The suspect, however, was still inside and robbed the man after he called police. Patrolman Ray was entering the store as the suspect attempted to flee and was shot twice by the suspect.

Patrolman Ray was survived by his daughter and two sons.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 39th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
