Officer Rapaski was shot and killed during a robbery at a bar while he was off duty with his wife. During the robbery the two suspects made him and the bar owner lay face down on the floor. As Officer Rapaski went for his gun the suspects shot him in the back seven times and then shot and killed the bar owner. The next day one of the suspects accidently shot and killed himself as he went for his gun when cornered by police officers.

The second suspect turned himself in the next day. He was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life on August 16, 1969.

Officer Rapaski was survived by his wife and five children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 43rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
