Police Officer William Albers succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained three weeks earlier in the emergency room of Johns Hopkins Hospital.

He was working a secondary employment detail at the hospital when a mental patient entered seeking voluntary treatment. The man became violent, overpowered Officer Alberts, and gained control of his service weapon.

As the two struggled for the revolver Officer Albers was shot five times. Officer Albers managed to regain control of his weapon and fired the last round into the suspect's chest killing him instantly.

Officer Alberts was survived by his wife and three children.
