Sergeant Porteous was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a violent suspect.
On July 23, 1900, three New Orleans police Officers approached a suspect who was sitting with a friend. The suspect produced a handgun and opened fire, wounding one of the officers.

When they entered the home Captain Day and Patrolman Lamb were shot and killed when the man opened fire with a .38 caliber Winchester rifle. Investigators received a tip three days later that provided the address of a location where the suspect was hiding. When officers arrived at the scene the suspect shot and killed Sergeant Porteous and Corporal Lally.
