Police Officer Joseph Pocchio was shot and killed after he stopped a vehicle he suspected was stolen.

He spotted the vehicle inside of Branch's Brook Park in Newark and conducted a traffic stop. Before he could exit his vehicle, the driver opened fire, killing Officer Pocchio.

The subject was apprehended and convicted of murder.

Officer Pocchio had served with the Essex County Police Department for seven years.
