Captain Edward Pike was shot and killed while investigating a series of high profile robberies. Authorities had received a tip that the suspects would be arriving at a location at around midnight to unload some of the stolen items. Captain Pike and a motorcycle patrolman went to the location and concealed themselves behind a woodshed.

A short time later a car arrived at the location and one of the occupants got out and started shining a flashlight around the area. The light shined on Captain Pike, who immediately opened fire on the suspect. The suspect returned fire, mortally wounding Captain Pike, and then fled in the vehicle.

Captain Pike was taken to McKennan Hospital where he died a short time later.

Captain Pike was survived by his wife and six children.
