Sergeant Adams was shot and killed with his own service weapon while making a traffic stop. The man he stopped for reckless driving began to struggle with Sergeant Adams. He was able to obtain the officer's gun and shot him three times. He surrendered to police two hours later.

The suspect was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life in prison on March 3, 1964. He died in prison on Febuary 23, 1983.
