Patrolman Pete Phillips was shot and killed while investigating a domestic dispute between a man and a woman at the intersection of East Cambridge Avenue and Hospital Street, near the entrance to Brewer High School.
As he stepped out of his patrol car the man shot him in the head with a .45 caliber handgun. Patrolman Phillips was taken to a local hospital where he died a short time later. The man was arrested and charged with murder. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, where he later died.
Patrolman Phillips had served with the Greenwood Police Department for four years. He was survived by his wife, two children, mother, and four siblings.
