Officer Carl Peterson was shot and killed as he was using a call box at the corner of West Lexington Street and Greene Street. A man attacked him, took his revolver, and shot him in the head. The suspect, arrested a short time later, said he did not know why he did it.

Officer Peterson had been with the agency for 20 years and was survived by his wife and stepdaughter.
