Patrolman Augustus Perreira was shot and killed after stopping at a local convenience store.

He had entered the store unaware that a disturbance call had just been placed from there. He began to escort a male out of the store when the man stated he was not going to go to jail. The suspect then produced a handgun and shot Patrolman Perreira several times. He was able to return fire, wounding the suspect.

The suspect was found guilty by reason of insanity and sent to the Colorado State Hospital where he still remained in 2001.

I went to Colorado Springs recently to participate in several events for the memorial. It was remarkable. Some very, very, very special people worked extremely hard to make that weekend happen. Your son and daughter-in-law were a part of it, because everyone there opened their arms and embraced them from the beginning. Everyone I met was extraordinary, and their commitment to this is amazing. I thought I would be sad, but I felt so blessed by all that happened I could only feel grateful, and overjoyed when they allowed me to pitch-in a bit. It meant a great deal to me. I will always remember the dedication, and love of all involved. Unfortunately, two more of your brothers have lost their lives. Our prayers will go out to their families.
