On February 14, 1947, Detective Louis Abbott was searching for a suspect in connection with an armed robbery and murder of a tavern owner. The detective spotted the suspect attempted to question him. As Detective Abbott approached the suspect, an ex-convict, drew a gun and shot the detective. Detective Abbott succumbed to his injuries at Provident Hospital on March 3, 1947.

The suspect was killed during an gunfire exchange with arresting officers.

Detective Abbott is buried in Erie, Pennsylvania.
