Officer Cornelius O'Keefe was shot and killed while searching for an assault suspect at 2255 hours.

During his search, he encountered a man inside a candy store on Olive Street. The man shot Officer O'Keefe in the chest. Due to thunderstorms, no other officers heard the shot and they did not find Officer O'Keefe for 15 minutes. During the ensuing investigation, the original assault suspect was arrested and determined to be the prime suspect in Officer O'Keefe's murder.
Officer O'Keefe had been employed with the St. Louis Police Department for 12 years.

On the 98th anniversary of Officer O'Keefe's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Officer O'Keefe is not forgotten.
