Officer O'Connell was shot and killed when three masked suspects tried to rob a saloon he was a patron in. Officer O'Connell opened fire, killing one suspect, but was fatally wounded by one of the suspects. He died two hours later at the hospital.

The two other suspects escaped, but were later arrested.
