Trooper O'Brien was shot and killed during a traffic stop on the Kansas Turnpike near Matfield Green. During a struggle with the three suspects, they obtained his weapon and shot him twice. The suspects were later apprehended after a lengthy shootout with other officers. One turned states evidence and served 10 years, another was given a five year sentence, and the third man was sentenced to serve 45 years to life. The suspects were wanted for a string of armed robberies.

In May 2007 the suspect was denied parole.

Trooper O'Brien had served with the agency for 4 years. He was survived by his expectant wife.
