Trooper O'Brien was shot and killed during a traffic stop on the Kansas Turnpike near Matfield Green. During a struggle, they obtained his weapon and shot him twice. Three suspects were later apprehended after a lengthy shootout with other officers. One turned states evidence and served 10 years, another was given a five year sentence, and the third man was sentenced to serve 45 years to life

In May 2007 the suspect was denied parole.

Trooper O'Brien had served with the agency for 4 years. He was survived by his expectant wife.
