Reflections for K9 Sasha

Every year at our Law Enforcement Memorial Service here in Oldham County, Kentucky, we remember the K9s who have fallen in the line of duty. K9s participate in the service. Sasha's picture and obit will appear in our 2013 memorial service booklet.

Sasha, I just couldn't stop thinking about you since I read this 3 days ago. Being a former handler myslf, in 1992 I got my first K9, a black and bown Rott. named Megie, my best friend. She became my family dog later and died of old age. I'm sure she was there to welcome and guide you in haven. Although I'm in the private sector now, I rescued a 3 week old Border collie 3yrs ago left for dead. I fed her through a bottle for a few wks until she could eat puppy food. I named her C.J. Now 3yrs later, CJ has been the best dog I ever owned. She is responsible for saving the life a a 14yr old girl lost in the middle of the deep northern woods in a snow storm. It was 1am and the Sheriff's dept. have been searching for hours at this time. I arrived with CJ to offer assistants and was told NO wait til day light. CJ didn't want to wait and pulled me like crazy, 4 hrs later deep in the woods there the girl was hid behind a log, crying and scard of the sounds of the wolves howling. At this time I had no idea where I was or even how to get out. CJ took action again and led us home, 4 hrs later we were out. The next day CJ spent playing with my kids and all their friends, it was she loves. She is an all a round K-9. I share this with you becaus she is a lot like you, from what I have read. You two would have been great friends. I can understand how an Officer can leave a k-9 in the vehicle for awhile because of a call. What I don't understand is how they can forget or not take pre-caution steps. My dog is always on my mind and even comes on family vactions when possible. I always keep a covered bucket of water and bowl of food on the back floor of my vehicle which I uncover when I get out, just in case. On those really hot days I also keep a cooler of dry ice in my vehicle which I open when I get out, just in case. It's just a few extra steps that could make a world of difference. Sasah, I do beleive that new rules will be set for the handling of K-9's going forward, so rest assured you didn't die in vein. RIP my friend, may god be with you.
