King

K9 King was shot and killed by a man who had fired a gun inside his home and ran into a nearby wooded area off along Route 610, between Sherando and Shenandoah Acres.

The man's wife had called the sheriff's office after the man fired the gun in the home and then ran into the woods. Several deputies were searching the woods for him when he suddenly emerged and shot at K9 King's handler. K9 King was released for an apprehension but was shot by the man. Despite being wounded, King still attempted to apprehend the suspect but was shot and killed.

Deputies took the man into custody after he shot K9 King.

Prior to becoming a police canine, K9 King had been ordered destroyed after killing several sheep. The judge gave King a reprieve on the condition he be used as a police canine. He originally served with the Staunton Police Department in 1965 before being donated to the Augusta County Sheriff's Office in 1971.
