Criteria for Inclusion (K9s)

ODMP K9 honors law enforcement canines of any breed that die or are killed in the line of duty. All submissions of fallen canines will be reviewed and a line of duty status determination made based on the information provided.

 

QUALIFYING CAUSES OF DEATH

Felonious Causes: Any law enforcement canine who is killed in a felonious way as a result of a line of duty incident.

Accidental Causes: Any law enforcement canine who dies in an accidental way as a result of a line of duty incident. Accidental causes includes deaths related to exposure to chemicals or other toxins while on duty.

Heat Exhaustion: Any law enforcement canine who dies of natural causes related to heat exhaustion while tracking, training, or if left in a department-owned vehicle.

DISQUALIFYING CAUSES OF DEATH

Any law enforcement canine whose death meets one of the following conditions shall be ineligible to be included on ODMP K9:

  • Bloat
  • Cancer
  • Other medical conditions
  • Accidental deaths while off duty
  • Heat stroke due to being left in a POV
