It has only been a year since this tragic loss - an eternity for Constable Plunkett's family, I'm sure. I am writing to ensure that they know that he is not, and never shall be, forgotten by the people he served and protected so long and so well.
A fine man, officer, husband, father, and involved citizen was taken on August 2, 2007, and there is less good in the world because of it. It is up to us who remain to take up the work he left for us, in whatever capacity that we can.

My memorial condolences to his family on this sad aniversary.

FOREVER IN MY THOUGHTS, FOREVER IN MY HEART. I REMEMBER YOU, TODAY, TOMORROW AND ALWAYS.

A Part Of Our Country Has Died

Somebody killed a policeman that day
And a part of our country has died...
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Was buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't still fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman that day...
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side;
He answered the call... of himself gave his all,
And a part of our country has died...

I've been with YRP for less than 10 years, and while it's been 9 months, I still find myself in a state of disbelief that one of our own is gone. Godspeed my friend.

Badges of the blue
Weep so endlessly,
For their brothers in blue
Who have died so needlessly.

So many sons of mothers,
And fathers of sons,
Gone before their lives
Had even begun.

Through endless summer days,
And numbered winter years,
Nothing will halt
The forgotten badges’ tears.

God bless you and your family. Rest is peace brother.

I haven't spent a lot of time this year reading the memorials of the fallen officers, mainly because it saddens me that so many great men and women have fallen. It's a terrible thing that so many great lives were cut so short. As a fallen officer survivour and a fellow Canadian, my heart goes out to all those that knew and loved Constable Plunkett, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in this journey that you walk and that Robert will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg.

Constable Plunkett, thank you for helping to make this world a safer place. If you run into my late fiance Dennis up there give him a hug for all of us down here. It's been just over 4 1/2 years but, we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

My deepest condolences to Rob Plunketts family friends and members of his unit. He was a true hero on and off of the job. You will be remembered by all of us at YRP. I was working the morning Cst. Plunkett was killed, and it was very difficult to comprehend that one of our brothers had been killed in the line of duty. Such a tragic loss of such an incredible person. May you rest in peace and watch over us from up above.

Now that the flurry of activity has settled in what was the aftermath of Robs death I have time to gather my thoughts and true emotions. We have lost a outstanding member of our service, he lived his life like some of us would like to live ours. He dedicated his efforts 100% when it came to his work, family or charities he was involved in. It was a fitting funeral and send off for such a nice guy. I hope your family finds some small comfort in the sadness the thousands of us felt with the loss of husband, father, friend and co-worker.
Rest In Peace Rob you will be missed.

I am deeply saddened by your line of duty death. I send my thoughts and prayers to your family and colleagues. I was honoured to participate in your funeral as part of the motorcycle escort. I am overwhelmed by the proud legacy you have left. Your dedication to family, your professional and exemplary service and your enthusiatic volunteerism is an example for us all to aspire to. You will be missed but you will not be forgotten.
