Constable Desjardins was seen saving Mr. Nesbit, a Member of Parliament, who had lost his way in the smoke filled corridors. Constable Desjardins led Mr. Nesbit MP to safety, then returned to assist in the fire fighting.
Constable Desjardins and several others were killed when a section of the west tower of the Speaker's Entrance collapsed and buried the men beneath tons of debris.
A total of seven people died in the fire that night including one Member of Parliament, Mr. Bowman Brown Law. Two ladies also perished that night when they decided to return inside to get their fur coats. Also lost in the fire were records that told the story of the deaths of one of this country's earliest police forces, the Northwest Mounted Police. | |
